Making of a camel for life size nativity

The camel is first sculpted as a small maquette, it is then scanned, digitally finished, then milled on our CNC milling machine. This provides a rough armature to which we can apply clay. The clay is then sculpted to its final finish. It will then be prepped for the molding process.

Demolding the Big Nativity Holy Family statue

The Holy Family statue is cast in bonded marble. After the casting process is completed, the statue is demolded. The fiberglass outer mold or mother mold is removed. The silicone mold is carefully removed. This reveals the finished statue. This is far from the completed stage of the statue. The statue will then be prepped for the various finishing stages.

Demolding a life size donkey for a nativity

This shows the demolding of a life size donkey from Big Nativity. This donkey is on display at Temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during Christmas time. The donkey is fabricated of bonded marble. The artisan is removing the fiberglass and silicone mold. The statue is then inspected and will go to the next step in the fabrication finishing process. These life size nativity statues include a Holy Family statue, Sheep (Ewe and Lamb) and Donkey. Other Big Nativity statues include Wisemen, Shepherds, and different animals. Big Nativity is currently finishing a camel to add to their life size nativity scene.

Do we ever have a bad casting?

Do we ever have failed castings of statues? Yes, we do, and it is very tragic, a lot of time and material goes into each statue. We take every precaution to reduce failures, however, it inevitably happens on occasion. This video shows what happens when a life-size nativity Holy Family statue does not turn our right. The mask not only protects the artisan from fumes but also protects the ears of those around him from hearing his words when a statue fails and it has to be discarded and started over.

Demolding a life size nativity sheep

Demolding of a life size nativity sheep statue by Big Nativity. The fiberglass and silicone mold are removed revealing the statue which is cast in bonded marble. The statue is cast using the rotational casting method. The mold is reassembled in reverse order. The life size nativity sheep is then inspected for the next step in the finishing process.

Two Kings Life Size Nativity Statue

The Two Kings statue is the largest of the Big Nativity statues. It is two kings together in one statue. A Standing King with a staff, and a Kneeling King. The kneeling king is holding his gift, while the standing king grasps his staff and has his gift for the Savior at his feet. Reach out to us through our Contact page. We will generally respond to you within the hour unless all of us are in the shop making nativity statues!
